Lucky Bread Co - Brooklyn Mall Pretoria

There are a lot of options to choose from if you wish to eat, or more specifically find coffee, in Brooklyn Mall.  One of my regular spots is the modern little "under the escalator" Lucky Bread Co.  My review will cover my last 3 visits combined.

This place is welcoming - the design of the counters, the colour choices, the artisan breads on the shelves, the counter space utilised to display some food choices, the dress of the waiters, make this establishment visually appealing.

You can order at the counter for take out and wait at one of the bar stools, or be seated on the other side where a number of tables are available as well as long wooden "sharing" tables.  Please be warned, when you sit down on the chairs at the tables you will slide slightly backwards which always manages to catch me unawares and amuses me when I see other patrons sit for the first time, because for one minute you think the seat is giving way.

Service - the waiters are quick and friendly.  They know the menu and are happy to oblige requests.

Food - One of my favourites here is the hot pressed sarmie with gypsy ham and a very unique sweet mustard along with tomato and white cheddar - you can choose your bread and I usually, as with this visit, choose sourdough. The mustard dressing is really good and the filling is properly melted and hot.  I hate it when you get a toasted sandwich and the filling is just lying there, cold and staring at you.  Just like toasting two pieces of bread and then slapping on the filling.  That is not a toasted sandwich. I have also had it with rye, just as good.

Important to note that if you order it as a take out, you get it nicely wrapped in a serviette and placed in a decent little packet.

Drinks - The cappuccino is always foamy and they use great beans here, but one thing I do wish to comment on is that when you have it served in a cup, it is a very small serving ... I seem to finish it in a couple of sips ... the cup is tapered and gets narrower towards the bottom.  The take out portion seems much larger.  I have once before ordered a take out one and had it at the table with my lunch.  More coffee addict sized serving. You should also look at their counter display of single origin beans - there is much to choose from.

Pricing - I find their pricing well in line, if not below the other restaurants in the mall both for food and drink.  The hot pressed sarmie at R54 is worth it and cappuccinos at R20 are a steal.  I have also had the berry, banana and yogurt smoothie - a healthy choice for both your body and wallet at R25.

Conveniently situated right underneath the escalators to the movies, pay them a visit on your next movie night - you will be glad you did.

Old Town Italy - Menlyn Maine Pretoria

I ended up here by accident one morning as I was waiting for the DHL courier store to open and was in dire need of a coffee.

Without realising that it had two entrances, I found a little area opposite Woolworths with quaint tables and chairs and settled myself down.  Only afterwards at the invitation of the waiter did I enter the doors into what is quite a magical tastebud experience. This is not just a restaurant, this is like walking through the looking glass into a cobblestone street and moving from counter to counter in what is certainly a bite of Italy.  It will take a longer review than normal to cover this.

Right in the entrance is the charcuterie - meat shop.  It reminded me of the photos my daughter sent me when her cheflife took her to Parma in Italy for a week.  The photos she sent of the meats hanging in the speciality stores - this is the first time I see something similar.  They are displayed along with more beautiful cheese than you can imagine and everything is available for tasting - fresh, tart, rich, tingling against your palette. There is nothing like the aroma of prosciutto and mortadella.

Between the sections is the most beautiful selection of pastas, Italian foodstuffs and products and all such.  The finest vermicelli and other in flavours that set your tastebuds alight.  The products are imported and I looked at them through the eyes of my daughter, hearing her voice telling me the uses for each ..... when you stand here, you want to cook - you must cook. There is fresh produce, juices .. everything to appeal to your every sense. And turn around - because behind you is a selection of pastries that you have to behold.

Dragging yourself onwards you will walk straight into the gelato bar - your sugar count soars simply looking at the fantastic selection available and it comes accompanied by a sweet and chocolate counter that stretches to the door.  The confectionery is beautiful.  Pricey
and very very beautiful.  I even spotted a giant slab of chocolate that looked as if you could eat on it for a year ..... for R695.  Lovely shopping with the eyes.

Opposite you find their artisan bakery and if you are a lover of the fresh smell of bread, you could find yourself drowning in this section - decadent aromas.  If you are carb watching ... best you walk a wide arc around here.

They also have a dedicated Wine Room which is at exactly the right location ... slightly darker, slightly cooler and a very impressive collection.

There are many tables all over the restaurant scattered between the various sections.  No matter where you choose you will marvel at the attention to detail of the interior itself and the various items that are included in the decorating.  No expense was spared, this is obvious.

Now on to the actual food part -

Service - Warm and friendly - helpful and happy to oblige requests like my continual one of my coffee being hot please.  Waiters are well turned out and there seem to be no shortage. It was actually the waiter on my first visit who asked me if I had ever been inside and invited me to come and look.  Imagine if he had not ....... On the 2nd visit however we appeared to have too many waiters as there was quite a mixup with the order.

Food - The first time I went I had IL Bosco Rosso - all their eggs are free range and these were served poached with streaky bacon and hollandaise sauce, accompanied by artisanal bread- I had rye.  The portion was generous and it was served hot with lovely crispy bacon. The 2nd time I went I decided to try the Artisanal Bread selection served with Edam Cheese and Homemade Jam.  The only problem was that it arrived with only one type of bread and when I pointed out that the menu said "selection" the waiter said that they did not serve it like that.  You have to choose one. I left it but still feel that if you get to choose one then it should read differently.   I ordered it with a side of streaky bacon as well as the baked beans at her suggestion.  Very tasty.  I am not a baked beans fan generally, but this was delicious and spicy.  My friend had half and also ordered the Sebastians sausage patties topped with poached eggs, oven dried tomatoes and ginger marmalade.
There was some confusion when it arrived.  On his plate was his Sausage patty breakfast and also my bacon and my little silver dish of beans.  I had my bread and jam and edam. So we had to move all my bits and pieces from his plate to mine by hand which left his plate looking very empty and unfinished and obviously not so clean having lifted my bacon off it. Also the ginger marmalade did not arrive., we had to ask twice. Perhaps the waitress just had an off day - she was very friendly in trying to solve it but there were several mistakes. Maybe the fact that we were served by 3 different people had caused the confusion.  The continual fidgeting to remove and add things to his plate did irritate my friend.

Drinks - I had several cappuccinos and my friend an espresso and cappuccino - they were good.

Pricing - Very well priced for breakfast.  My artisanal toast brekki was R35 plus the bacon and beans and his breakfast R72 which is very competitive matched against some chain franchises which cannot be compared in style.   I find their cappuccinos at R22 very cheap. I cannot comment on any other part of the menu or its pricing, except the breakfast menu.

I also want to note that on my first visit, whilst strolling through, a wonderful man called Taki, approached me - he was seeing the joy on my face looking at everything and came over to ask if it was my first visit.  What followed was a 30 minute animated chat between us as he explained everything about this wonderful market experience to me and we spoke at length about my chef daughter, her training and position in CT.  He said that when she visits in Nov she should definitely be brought over to say hi.  This will happen on the 4th when she arrives as I intend to treat her to lunch here.  I think a professional chef like her will find great joy in this place.

So go along - but be warned .... on Sunday we went past as I wanted my hubby and son to experience the food and the waiting time for a table was an hour.  So we left.  Perhaps try in the week if you can - but try you must!!!

Qui si mangia con tutti i sensi!

Ocean Basket - Queenswood, Pretoria

A friend invited us out to dinner tonight and we set off to a Queenswood neighbourhood favourite - Ocean Basket.

I was happy to find her sitting at a table on the deck, as the heat is currently stifling and the pre-rain breeze made it very pleasant.  I was even more happily surprised to find that you cannot smoke at these tables, as some restaurants do allow that outside, which makes sitting outside tricky for non-smokers.  We happily dodged the odd random raindrop.

The restaurant itself looks like all OB franchises and so cannot be faulted for the decor which clearly marks it as a fish restaurant - the wording on the walls is clever and apt.

Service - our waiter was extremely friendly which came accompanied by a killer smile.  He let us know when there was going to be a small delay in our meal and came by just enough times to ensure that we were okay.  The only glitch came in the ordering of my husband's meal - a 300g speciality fish plus a salad.  About ten minutes after placing our order, another man approached our table, his shirt was different to that of the waiters so we assumed him to be management, wanting to know what my husband had ordered since the waiter was confused.  We do not know if that was "he is new and still confused, or he has been here five years and is generally confused".  We did comment that fish and a salad was pretty straightforward.  Also to note is that the waiter was not sure what exactly the "speciality fish" of the day / week or whatever was - so my husband ordered without actually knowing at that stage.  This is something waiters should know, or find out.  Notwithstanding the problem with that order, the joyful nature of the waiter himself almost cancelled this confusion out, he deserves kudos for his great manner.

Drinks - our orders were restricted to diet cold drinks, lime and soda and sparkling water which all arrived very cold.  My cappuccino was hot *and strong* just as I like it, but the filter coffee ordered by our friend came filled to the very brim with no accompanying milk.  She then asked for some (cold) and received boiling hot milk, the only problem being she had nowhere to put it in the cup.  Slight mix up, slurping from the cup and a very burnt tongue.

Food - Before our meals arrived we were served a very nice bread with crispy crust and fresh butter.  Our friend and myself had the prawn and calamari combo, served with chips for her and half chips half rice for myself.  It arrived hot in the pan and at R125 was well worth it - 6 prince prawns and a generous portion of calamari rings and legs, in a crispy batter.  She elected to have hers cajun style.  My hubby's 300g of fish was juicy and very nice according to him and the salad crispy and fresh.  The waiter did bring the menu and offer dessert, but the fish is quite rich so we decided to call it a night then.

If it is fish you are after, and you want the "safety" of a franchise restaurant, then the Ocean Basket will be a good choice.  It was busy where we sat on the deck and quite busy inside, which means that for a midweek night, other locals also thought so.

I would also like to mention the new menu format, which may not be brand new but was different to when I last went to OB.  It is an eye pleasing menu and you should especially pay attention to the Mediterranean sushi section on the front page ..... looks great - definitely for next time.

Give them a try.

Col'Cacchio - Camps Bay Western Cape

So wanting to dip our toes into the very cold ocean, and me wanting to show my son Camps Bay, led to us hopping into the trusty Uber and heading off to a very busy main road on a Saturday late afternoon.

We made our early dinner choice by standing on the beach with our backs to the sea and the plethora of eateries in front of us.  Col'Cacchio is one I have visited before in Camps Bay as well as elsewhere and I have yet to be disappointed, so they won the beach roulette of restaurants.

The restaurant is situated on the first floor of the building and it fully utilises the magnificent view by having massive windows all the way around.  Sunset does bring with it blinding rays, but the restaurant is geared for this.  It truly is a beautiful setting.

Service - It could not be faulted.  The waiter was very knowledgeable when it came to the menu and he was attentive without being intrusive.  He was happy to make suggestions re dessert and the cocktails and kept up lively conversation in describing these.  When my food arrived, I wanted just a twist of coarse salt on my salad, but managed to dislodge the lid of the salt grinder, releasing an entire container of salt all over my food.  He immediately lifted the plate and said the salad would be remade.  However I assured him that simply "shaking out the plate" would be sufficient.  Good however that they were prepared to fix my error.

Drinks - The cocktails were exactly as described on the menu, and served ice cold.  We chose Green apple daiquiri's and they were more than happy to make the one alcohol free even though that does not actually appear under the Mocktails list.  The perfect accompaniment to the view.  My cappuccino afterwards was rich and foamy, however I would have liked it to be a little hotter, since I had especially requested that.

Food - I decided to combine a salad and a starter and had the Piatto di Cibo which is a platter of salami, salame piccante, prosciutto crudi, chorizo and olives (which they held since I do not eat olives).  I added some mini pizza bread at the waiter's suggestion.  It comes served on a board and the meats are fresh and beautifully presented.  Along with that I had a Caesar salad to which I added italian anchovy.  It was a big portion and although all restaurants salads seem to be the mini mountain of lettuce, they ensured that the mountain topping was generous - so that it was lettuce 50% and toppings 50%, which is most often not the case.  Very fresh and the perfect menu item to accompany my platter.

My son had a pizza with bacon and feta and given the amount of pizza he eats, I trust his view that this was crispy, well sized and more than adequately topped.

Despite his fantastic descriptions, we were not able to still find space for the marvellous desserts the waiter outlined.

Pricing - When one looks at the pricing of the pizzas, you need to keep in mind the cost of a large pizza at the average franchise pizza takeaway stores - in relation this is perfectly in line.  Also, those cannot compare to this.  Good pizza costs upwards of R100 for a large and well filled one. My platter was R88 and given the amount of meats on there, it was a reasonable price to pay along with R56 for a very filling salad. I consider it money well spent.

So if you want great Italian food - this is the place for you.  If you want great Italian food and a breathtaking view - this is definitely the place for you.

Anche l’occhio vuole la sua parte (The eyes want their part – in the sense that something has to be pleasing to the eyes – apart from having other qualities).

SALT Charcuterie - Hazelwood Pretoria

This is the second time I visit this eatery.  Snuggled neatly between all the other restaurants and coffee shops which make up the hugely popular Hazelwood Village, this one is so aesthetically pleasing to me.

The wooden deck and umbrellas outside lead to an inside section which reminds me very much of my most loved top Cape Town restaurant - the word is trendy.  Not in the steel and glass kind of way, but in the our decor is minimalistic because here we focus on food kind of way. Clearly I am a fan of restaurants where the chefs and food preparation is visible. Obviously this does not work unless you are a certain kind of establishment.

So at 1pm today the 3 of us decided to revisit Salt.

Service:  Warm and inviting staff who immediately suggested that sitting inside to escape the heat was not a good plan, since it was pretty warm in there.  Instead we were shown to a lovely corner table on the deck, in the shade, catching the breeze from every direction. Our waiter was attentive and his knowledge of the beers available, both local and craft, impressive.  Our orders were swiftly taken and he was able to outline the differences between the two food choices I was stuck between and make a suggestion.

Food:  I had steamed buns served with crispy friend chicken pieces and Asian slaw.  This was an unusual choice for me and I was pleasantly surprised.  Initially it looked like a small portion for a main, but the meal was filling and delicious.  Steamed buns can turn to overcooked very quickly - these were spot on.  I ordered a side of fries and these were crispy and very fresh.  My one lunch partner had the 500g rib eye steak served on the bone and this monster arrived filling the plate and leaving just enough place for his salad. According to him it was prepared medium as requested and very tasty.  The other person had the Porchetta burger – onion & bacon jam, black garlic aioli, melted mozzarella and a whopping portion at that.  He has a healthy appetite and still managed to take some "for later".
As a starter we shared a selection of breads served with fresh butter.  I am a fan of any breads which have good crispy crusts and as with the first time, they did not disappoint.
I would however have liked the waiter to tell us what breads were on the board when he brought it to the table. This is what I would expect from a gourmet restaurant serving unusual items. Since he didn't, I called a passing waiter and asked him and his reply of, it is a brioche, sourdough and one other, did not help.  Luckily the manager was the next to pass and we found that we were eating rye with an apricot and fig filling and a very nice beetroot crusted sourdough.  Very tasty.

Drinks - the Jack Black ale was cold as were the colddrinks, so it went down a treat and the cappuccino I had was served hot and strong.

Salt is not cheap.  However this kind of dining experience is not fast food.  This is a well thought out regularly changing menu of tasting items and full plate items.  Gourmet restaurants featuring well trained chefs are worth the visit - they take the time to put their hearts on the plates. This is fresh food, carefully selected and perfectly prepared - and for that you pay.

So go and spend some time under the umbrellas on the deck.  You will be glad you did.

Tai Ping - Newlands Cape Town

I love Chinese food.  I admit that up front.  However I am very fussy about where I eat it, and at the moment I have only two places ...... one in Pretoria (to be reviewed at another time) which we have frequented for many many years, and one in CT which I have been to four times over the past year.

Recently I had the pleasure of again visiting this fantastic restaurant.

The decor is tasteful without being overdone - tables laid with chinese bowls and spoons and red tablecloths.  The chinese decor is authentic and away from the sometimes kitch decor of some other establishments.

Service - Waiters are attentive without being intrusive.  They know the menu and are happy to make suggestions. Service is very fast.

Food - I have always opted for the set menu.  They have a number of them on offer, including those for one person or two or three.  The prices are extremely reasonable and are based on how many courses you have.  If you wish to try a number of dishes, this is the most economical way to do so.

This last time I had Set Menu A which offered sweetcorn soup (or whatever one I wanted), a spring roll, sweet and sour pork / stir friend chicken, fried rice, fortune cookie / bowtie and chinese tea all for only R109.  The soup was hot and deeply flavoured followed by a vegetable spring roll.  Their sweet and sour pork is my all time favourite as the batter is crispy, the pork incredibly soft and the sweet and sour sauce generously slathered on. My bowtie was the only slightly disappointing item in that it seemed slightly burnt / too dark. My dinner partner had the honey garlic chicken which was a generous portion and according to him had the right blend of garlic without it being overpowering.  He followed this up with dumplings which were melt in the mouth soft.

I have only one thing I would like to see done slightly differently, and that is the speed at which the various courses of the Set Menu arrive at the table.  I would have liked the breaks between dishes to be slightly longer as by the time the sweet and sour pork arrived I still had the last of the soup and the vegetable spring roll on the table as well.

As far as pricing goes, a portion of sweet and sour pork, ordered as a single item, is R102 vs R109 for the full set menu.  Simply as a reference point. For an individual portion that is quite pricey.

So if you are inclined towards Chinese food, and you are not a regular here, you need to put Tai Ping on your "to do" list - it is very much worth it.

Brooklyn Brothers - Lynnwood Manor Pretoria

Now this is a new eatery to me.  I only noticed them for the first time two weeks ago when I went to the car wash and found them in the Glenfair Shopping Centre.

Yesterday late afternoon I decided to visit them with two very hungry teenagers.  The signage and menu confirmed that this is a rib and burger joint.  The menu itself is trendy .... steel backed, with pages of fantastic photography and a milkshake assortment that ranges from the simple to those that fall just short of a dessert in a glass.  There is much to choose from.  The restaurant itself reminded me very much of a top burger place I visited in Cape Town last month.  Wooden tables, regular tables, an inside section, an outside deck and lots of craft beer posters etc.

Drinks - We all 3 ordered milkshakes across the range and they were ice-cold and matched the photos in the menu exactly.  Nothing had been spared to make the peanut butter one very much so and they really score high here.

Food & Service - This got a little complicated.  I ordered the wings, the smallest portion done on level 2 of the hotness barometer (if this was 2 then number 5 is aptly named Suicidal) which is served with a blue cheese sauce.  What puzzled me was that it was served with a half piece of celery.  Just that.  It seemed an odd choice, but perhaps to some it is the perfect thing for blue cheese sauce.  They were tasty although I would have liked them to have been much more crispy.  My son had a monster portion of 20 wings, done in 2 different sauces.  It was served nicely, piled high on a wooden board. The chips with bacon and cheese topping came in a separate basket and was a generous portion.  Now the complicated bit - my son's friend wanted a simple burger with only the patty and bacon.  She asked the waitress to show her where she could as such "build a burger" on the menu. The waitress herself then suggested a very plain burger.  Again the young lady said she only wanted a patty and bacon burger. The waitress confirmed that she wanted no garnish and the fact that she did confirm, means she understood this to be an actual burger.  When the food arrived, she was brought a board with a small plate on, and in there lay, looking scared and barren, a patty with a strip of bacon on top.  Just that. Due to the fact that we could not stop laughing, we only called the waitress several minutes later.  She did not take it well ..... we had every right to be irritated, however we were being good natured and she was irritated.  Snapped at us that we had ordered just a patty with bacon, which is ludicrous since she had pointed out the burger herself.  She took it away and returned 10 seconds later with the 2 items slapped onto a very anaemic looking bun.   An apology would have been nice if forthcoming.

Pricing - The wings were a little pricier than at other establishments which serve them in the same way with the blue cheese sauce, but obviously the more you have the less the cost.  The burger without a bun had been offered at a small discount because they assumed she wanted a less than burger, burger.  However what blew me away was the R75 for the one drink because it came with 4 cookies and chocolate around the edges.  It was a little glass jug but I am unsure how the cost for a milkshake with cookies at that premium is justified. In fact it is ludicrous.  A bottle of wine would have been cheaper.  In fact I saw an advert on the wall for 2 doubles of a popular alcoholic drink, that was R55.  So at R75 - wow.  Wish I had seen that at the time of ordering.

There was one other biggish concern but this is one which I will raise with the restaurant directly, simply because I think it will be the decent thing to do.

So if you are a rib and burger and beer and artisan milkshake kind of person, then go and see how they compare to other such establishments.  For me the R75 on top of the attitude about the burger roll, will make me think twice.  However taste differs, as it should.

Starlings - Claremont, Cape Town

So needing to get some me time whilst in CT recently with my son, visiting my daughter, I grabbed my phone and relied on that old stalwart, Google, to find me a "coffee shop in Southern suburbs" - amongst those it gave, Starlings had one of the highest ratings and a great description, so off I went with the trusty Uber.
On the website it did rate the time I chose, 11am, as one of it's busiest times.  They were not joking.  From outside it looks like a house, with a hedge and a fountain.  Easy to find as the photo on Google is spot on. Needless to say it was packed, but the very charismatic gentleman doing the "find you a table" thing, assured me that as I was only 1, he would get me a table quite quickly and invited me to wait on the benches by the fountain, which seem to be for that purpose.
The layout is attractive, somewhat like being in someone's house and garden, but just with a lot of furniture.  Inside there are both individual tables as well as a shared space at a long counter, broad enough to allow you to not sit nose to nose with the person opposite.  However wanting to read my paper, I was glad to be shown to a table outside.  The garden is lovely.
So to the food:
Cappuccino - The first one was as ordered, hot and strong.  I always specify hot, because I am a coffee addict and do not want to drink it lukewarm.  The second one was less hot and by the third one we had moved to luke-ish and I had to send it back to be reheated.  However I must note that it was creamy and delicious.
Breakfast - I chose a wonderful and unusual brekki for me - avocado, housemade pesto, roasted tomatoes and toast.  I had rye toast which was done well, not floppy warm bread and they are very generous with the amount of avo they give you.
Service - I am not sure if I arrived in a shift change, but the waiter I started with and the one I ended up with were 2 different people.  The former was attentive without being annoying, checked if all was satisfactory and asked if the coffee was hot enough (cup 1).  The latter waiter arrived when I moved to cup 2 and was at the tail end of my food.  I never saw him except for when he brought my coffee, and it seemed to take long to get his attention to order it.  However the great service of the first waiter was what gave me my lasting impression.
Value for money - Fantastic.  Cappuccinos were well priced and the brekki at R65 was well worth it, given that I had rye bread and a hefty serving of avocado.
If you live in Cape Town, I am sure you are familiar with Starlings.  If you are from out of town - well worth the visit.
