Brooklyn Brothers - Lynnwood Manor Pretoria

Now this is a new eatery to me.  I only noticed them for the first time two weeks ago when I went to the car wash and found them in the Glenfair Shopping Centre.

Yesterday late afternoon I decided to visit them with two very hungry teenagers.  The signage and menu confirmed that this is a rib and burger joint.  The menu itself is trendy .... steel backed, with pages of fantastic photography and a milkshake assortment that ranges from the simple to those that fall just short of a dessert in a glass.  There is much to choose from.  The restaurant itself reminded me very much of a top burger place I visited in Cape Town last month.  Wooden tables, regular tables, an inside section, an outside deck and lots of craft beer posters etc.

Drinks - We all 3 ordered milkshakes across the range and they were ice-cold and matched the photos in the menu exactly.  Nothing had been spared to make the peanut butter one very much so and they really score high here.

Food & Service - This got a little complicated.  I ordered the wings, the smallest portion done on level 2 of the hotness barometer (if this was 2 then number 5 is aptly named Suicidal) which is served with a blue cheese sauce.  What puzzled me was that it was served with a half piece of celery.  Just that.  It seemed an odd choice, but perhaps to some it is the perfect thing for blue cheese sauce.  They were tasty although I would have liked them to have been much more crispy.  My son had a monster portion of 20 wings, done in 2 different sauces.  It was served nicely, piled high on a wooden board. The chips with bacon and cheese topping came in a separate basket and was a generous portion.  Now the complicated bit - my son's friend wanted a simple burger with only the patty and bacon.  She asked the waitress to show her where she could as such "build a burger" on the menu. The waitress herself then suggested a very plain burger.  Again the young lady said she only wanted a patty and bacon burger. The waitress confirmed that she wanted no garnish and the fact that she did confirm, means she understood this to be an actual burger.  When the food arrived, she was brought a board with a small plate on, and in there lay, looking scared and barren, a patty with a strip of bacon on top.  Just that. Due to the fact that we could not stop laughing, we only called the waitress several minutes later.  She did not take it well ..... we had every right to be irritated, however we were being good natured and she was irritated.  Snapped at us that we had ordered just a patty with bacon, which is ludicrous since she had pointed out the burger herself.  She took it away and returned 10 seconds later with the 2 items slapped onto a very anaemic looking bun.   An apology would have been nice if forthcoming.

Pricing - The wings were a little pricier than at other establishments which serve them in the same way with the blue cheese sauce, but obviously the more you have the less the cost.  The burger without a bun had been offered at a small discount because they assumed she wanted a less than burger, burger.  However what blew me away was the R75 for the one drink because it came with 4 cookies and chocolate around the edges.  It was a little glass jug but I am unsure how the cost for a milkshake with cookies at that premium is justified. In fact it is ludicrous.  A bottle of wine would have been cheaper.  In fact I saw an advert on the wall for 2 doubles of a popular alcoholic drink, that was R55.  So at R75 - wow.  Wish I had seen that at the time of ordering.

There was one other biggish concern but this is one which I will raise with the restaurant directly, simply because I think it will be the decent thing to do.

So if you are a rib and burger and beer and artisan milkshake kind of person, then go and see how they compare to other such establishments.  For me the R75 on top of the attitude about the burger roll, will make me think twice.  However taste differs, as it should.
